EBook File Formats

Opera Journeys Libretto Series is now available in a variety of different formats. What is the difference between them, and how should the user select one over another?

There are two versions of the files in PDF:

• Either version of PDF requires that the user have Adobe Reader installed on the device. This is a free download from Adobe: http://www.adobe.com/products/readerle/
• Standard 2-column layout, which looks exactly the same as the printed book. Use this format for reading on a full-size computer screen. This format can be read on a small, handheld devise, like a Smartphone with the Pocket Adobe Reader installed, but the user will need to scroll left-to-right to read the lines, particularly in the case of "side-by-side" comparisons.
• 1-column layout for handhelds was created to allow the user to avoid the necessity of doing lots of left-to-right scrolling. This format can also be read on a laptop or desktop computer with Adobe Reader installed.

An alternative for handheld devices is Mobipocket Reader PRC format. This is a program that can run on PC, PalmOS, PocketPC, SymbianOs and Blackberry. Get this free download here: http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/default.asp

Alternatively, users who wish to use Microsoft Reader will need the LIT version of the ebooks. Microsoft Reader is available in both desktop and PocketPC versions and is is a free download from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/reader/download.asp
